Mountain Laurel Pilates Studio is a friendly studio and the first full-service Classical Pilates studio near Lake Wallenpaupack. The instructors are caring, professional, certified Pilates instructors who provide a personally tailored, comprehensive mind/body workout. Our studio is equipped with the full line of Peak Pilates apparatus including reformers, Cadillac, Chairs, towers, barrels, and more.
We offer private and small group sessions on the Pilates apparatus, as well as workshops and group mat classes.
How to Begin?
For your first class we offer a Private Evaluation Class. Price of Class is $50.00. This will introduce you to the Fundamentals and Pilates Principles of “The Pilates Method”. It will give you and your teacher a chance to see what your strengths and weaknesses are, and to discuss your physical history. If you have any past injuries we will also teach you modifications until you become stronger. You will then take away with you the knowledge you need to get the full benefit of Pilates.
How Many Private Classes do I need?
After the evaluation Class I always recommend taking the Introductory Series. You will then get individual attention and a greater understanding of using your body properly along with learning and breaking down the Principles of Pilates. Everyone is different and we all learn at a different rate. Be patient, learn properly, and you will reap the rewards of Pilates! You can’t beat the price either!
Introductory Special - 4 private mat + one reformer at $175.00 ( one time offer only for a new client) *Evaluation Class is a prerequisite to the Introductory Special*
What should I wear?
I recommend wearing comfortable breathable clothing. Please keep in mind not to wear anything baggy as the instructor will need to keep an eye on proper alignment and movement. Shoes are not worn. Going barefoot is common. If you prefer something on your feet, sticky socks are great! We do sell them at the Studio. Just ask at the desk.
What to expect in a group class?
You will start lying on your back, progress to seated rolling, lying on the side or belly, seated and then to all fours while exercising on an authentic raised platform Pilates Mat.
Classical Pilates teaches body awareness, developing a new level of mind and body connection. Injuries often occur where the body compensates for developmental imbalances or trauma. Classical is a wonderful tool for addressing these problems. With a better understanding of the injury or misalignment, the client can heal faster and is less prone to re-injury. Focus on the "POWERHOUSE" (muscles groups of the abdomen, lower back and buttocks) helps athletes and people with physically demanding jobs prevent or reduce injury.

How often do I need to do Pilates to see results?
By committing to Pilates just three times a week, you will get results!
top of page
How long before I see results?
The answer to this question varies. This really depends on the determination of the student. The following are factors in a successful session (workout): frequency of workouts, ability to focus and attend to the teacher's directions, and body awareness. If all factors are present, results are usually quick.
Will I lose weight doing Pilates?
Pilates, because of its resistive nature, will tone and lengthen muscle groups creating a longer, leaner appearance. Yet although the waistline will narrow and the thighs will slim down, Pilates is not a cardio workout. Pilates coupled with a cardio and diet regimens are the best ways to balance the scale of caloric energy.

What are the benefits of working out with Pilates apparatus?
Pilates apparatus consists of a wide array of equipment designed to accommodate clients at every ability level. It was developed by Joseph Pilates after he created the traditional mat exercises. According to Pilates Method Alliance, “Pilates equipment today is not much different than that of the Pilates apparatus in the original NY Pilates Studio. Spring tension, straps to hold feet or hands, supports for back, neck and shoulder are as important now as they were then. Because of the remarkable nature of the equipment to both challenge and support the body as it learns to move more efficiently, the inimitably designed pieces truly act as a complement to the challenging "matwork" exercises” (http://www.pilatesmethodalliance.org/)

My gym offers Pilates... why should I pay to come to Mountain Laurel Pilates Studio?
Although the widespread availability of Pilates classes is a tribute to its effectiveness as a workout system, Pilates classes are not necessarily comparable between studios and gyms. Mountain Laurel Pilates Studio has certified Pilates teaching in the Authentic Pilates Method and is a member of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) which means that in general the classes offered here will be superior to those offered at gyms or general fitness centers. The most noticeable difference between the two typically is seen in teaching style, skill and experience of the instructors. Mountain Laurel Pilates Studio also offers an extensive selection of Pilates equipment whereas the Pilates classes at gyms may only involve mats.

What is a Tower class?
The Pilates Tower is a unit that consists of springs and bars. In the Beginner Open Tower class students learn to build on the basic mat exercises utilizing the Tower apparatus for resistance. The varying types of resistance available in the Tower exercises help students continue to better engage the powerhouse. It is slower paced and the instructor will take time to familiarize the students with how to use the Tower.
What is the difference between apparatus/equipment sessions and mat classes?
The complete Pilates method involves both the apparatus and mat exercises. It is common to combine your private or semi-private session with a mat class. While both private/semi-private and group classes focus on flow, efficiency and control of movement, as well as precision, a private session will better allow the student to focus on his/her individual needs. During a private semi/private session the student can expect to work on the mat, the reformer (a gliding bed attached to springs and a frame), the Cadillac (The largest piece, also referred to as the "Trap Table" is a flat mat surrounded by a wooden frame, metal vertical poles on each corner, attaching springs), the chair (a seated apparatus with springs) Mat classes use a mat and your own body's weight as resistance against gravity. Although both are beneficial, the springs add both assistance work as well as resistance work to the method.

What do I do if I want to learn Classic Pilates Mat Exercises but don’t want to do Private Sessions?
For those new to Pilates and interested in learning the Mat exercises in a classroom setting, we offer our Pilates Mat Workshop, “Introduction to Pilates Mat Exercises.”
The Classic Pilates Mat exercises are appropriate for men and women of all ages, body types, and fitness levels. However, not every body can do every Pilates mat exercise to it’s fullest, especially when first learning Pilates. Modifications of the exercises are often necessary to allow the student of Pilates to gradually increase their strength and flexibility thereby reducing the possibility of unnecessary strain to the body. Learning Classic Pilates is a gradual process that over time and practice will go very deep into both body and mind. This is why we most strongly recommend private sessions to beginners. However, if you are unable to do private sessions, we offer you this wonderful alternative…
A Workshop for those NEW to Pilates… “An Introduction to Pilates Mat Exercises”
In this Workshop, a small group of students progress over the course of four, 55 minute classes, building on their knowledge; practicing and reviewing exercises. The workshop teaches the “Beginner” level Pilates Mat exercises, as well as introduces some of the concepts of Pilates. The instructor spends time showing participants appropriate modifications of specific exercises for their individual needs.
It is important to learn mat exercises gradually and thoroughly, in a very safe and supportive environment, and with a certified Classic Pilates instructor. We offer this workshop to do just that!
Please see Class Schedule for times and to sign up online or Call us to sign-up for the next Workshop!
